What is TMJ & how can massage help?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.  If you experience TMJ, it usually happens as a result of inflamed and painful chewing muscles around your jaw.

Some people experience the pain of TMJ on and off. It may come and go.

Other people may experience TMJ chronically and it can be very painful.

TMJ can be challenging to determine. Possible causes of TMJ include: inflammation, jaw injury, or clenching or grinding your teeth. It also can be genetic.

Signs of TMJ may include:
  • Pain or tenderness in your jaw, temporomandibular joints, or around your ear
  • Difficulty or pain while chewing
  • Locking of the jaw joint so that opening or closing your mouth is difficult
  • Shoulder tension
  • Frequent headaches

Remedies include sleeping with night guards to help prevent grinding teeth at night (see your dentist about this. Others look for ways to reduce inflammation and tension in the overall body/mind through  healthy eating, and practices like yoga, meditation and massage. Massage will help ease TMJ tension in the jaw an surrounding areas while bringing balance back to the body.

Our 45 minute head, neck and shoulder massage is a great option if you are looking for relief from the pain of TMJ.

living on purpose

"Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul; the blueprints of your ultimate achievements." -Napoleon Hill

What is purpose?

What does it mean to live "on purpose"?

Purpose as we understand and experience it is our dharma, our work in the world...the meaning of why we were born and what we came to here to "do".

Living on purpose means to be interested in our individual purpose and commit to the work of bringing it forth.

Not a small topic! However, knowing our purpose and then aligning it with our inner body in order to connect it to the outer world is what brings fulfillment.

In a noisy world, it may seem hard to do this. What's harder in the long run is not doing it.

How does our purpose connect to Sanctuary?
As some of you know, when we (Peter and Stephanie) opened Bronxville Wellness Sanctuary in 2011, we intentionally chose the word, "sanctuary" instead of "spa".

Why?
Simple. Peter and I had a vision, a burning desire to connect our inner purpose with an outer expression of that purpose. Inner purpose meaning our desire to support others on their life journey.
We set out with a vision  to provide awesome massage, body-work,  and facials, We also wanted to
create a healing space.

Over the last 11 years, we have stuck to our vision and have added services such as yoga, meditation, energy healing, and mentoring. We have evolved and will continue to.

Our vision was and still is to create an environment that feels like a Sanctuary: peaceful, safe, joy-filled, inspirational and educational...a kind and compassionate place people come to renew and nourish body, mind and spirit. A place to experience Sanctuary.

Easy? No.
Worth it? Every moment.

We can't help doing it! It's why we were  born. Whether we are writing an email, answering the phone, providing a service, purchasing candles, cleaning the bathroom...we do it all with purpose.

We are writing this to open up the dialogue about living on purpose. We are writing to inspire you to uncover and/or deepen into your purpose.

You may be thinking. "I have no idea what my purpose is!". That's okay. It's never too late to discover it. Keep in mind your purpose is what you must do. Maybe it's feeding your family, leading an organization, tending a garden, or anything in between. There's no wrong answers.

The path we choose to execute our purpose is the "how". Our how continues to evolve and grow as we do. In our case the "how" includes everything we offer from our services and workshops to our newsletter, writing, and snacks.  It also includes how we do what we do. Meaning, how we are being (joyful, grateful, kind) in our doing. Everything we do is mindfully guided by our purpose. Especially Peter's jokes!!!

As we continue to evolve and walk this path with you, our offerings will expand.

We are deeply grateful to you and for you. Thank you for allowing us to share our vision and live on purpose. It's a pleasure and a privilege.

What's coming up for you?
Feel free to email us and share your purpose!!! We support you.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Energy Body Clear

Like taking a shower, eating healthy food, and caring for our "material stuff", we also need to take care of our energy body.

By energy body I am talking about our physical body, mind/emotions & spirit, because we are energy!! Most people identify most with thought and emotional energy. What lives within and beneath these thoughts and emotions is who we are-- spirit in physical form...energy!

It’s not uncommon for people to “forget” or be confused about our energy system. As far as I recall, schools don’t’ have classes on the energy body.  Unless we are taught at home or seek out how the energy body impacts or day to life, we may find ourselves experiencing unnecessary suffering. By suffering I mean we may linger on problems and past events that end up keeping us stuck because the energy is literally stuck inside us. We end up resisting the present and continue to create a future that looks like the past. It's not sustainable.

What can we do to keep our energy clear and flowing??

1. Be Still
Stillness is the foundation for a well lived life.  We live in a non-stop and noisy world. Add our busy mind to that and a perfect storm ensues. Over time the noise  drowns out our own voice.
In stillness lives your connection to yourself, your desires...your truth. In stillness lies your connection to pure potential, what you WANT,  and the creativity of the universe of which we are a part that will support you in manifesting once you are clear.
One of our favorite ways to access and deepen stillness is with meditation.
Whether you have a formal meditation practice or not, simply sitting in silence or watching nature connects you to stillness and the energy of life itself. It rejuvenates, restores and renews us.

2. Energy Healing
Come to the Sanctuary for a Shamanic Energy Healing Session. Shamanic energy healing is one of the most ancient forms of healing practiced by humans worldwide. Shamanic sessions are powerful for assisting clients with big life changes such as: job transitions, marriage and divorce, finding love, death and grief, and manifesting of one's passion and life calling. The energy work is a proactive partnership between the client and practitioner that facilitates deep transformation and healing. When we clear the energy we are able to shed the past, heal the present and empower the future. Keep in mind Shamanism is not a religion - it is a way to improve your life.

3. Stay Inspired
If you find yourself getting bored/restless or “depressed”, plug into something or someone who inspires you! This can be anything from a creative project to reading a book, listening to a podcast or trying a new activity! Sometimes changing up routines can add new inspiration to your day. Examples include changing your exercise routine, starting your day with 10 minutes of yoga/stretching/breathing, walk instead of drive, take a different route, and maybe call instead of text or social media! Whatever you feed your mental/emotional body impacts your energy. Choose wisely.

Remember, we only have this moment. Make it great by taking regular care of your energy body.
Do everything you possible can to feel your best. Life is short. You deserve to live it energetically well!

Namaste,
Stephanie

"Some people don't need to be pushed. They just need to be sat with." -Sarah Masen

What does it mean to relax?

For some it's reading a book, for others it's binge watching a favorite show...and for others it's taking time to be still, listen, and nourish body, mind, spirit.

Whatever it is, all of us at the Sanctuary support you!
